Our Mission
Bridging the Gap for Children Raised by Grandparents
Massachusetts Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (MassGRG) is dedicated to providing children raised by grandparents with enriching activities, opportunities, and experiences. Founded in 2020, MassGRG is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit that responds to the growing gap in resources between children in the foster care system and those being raised by grandparents and other kin outside it.
By funding individual activity requests, like sports registration, music lessons, and camp fees, MassGRG gives children the same chance to grow, learn, and thrive as their peers.
In addition, we provide support to the Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren for workshops, special events, and outreach.
Right now in Massachusetts, thousands of children are being raised by grandparents outside the foster care system, with far fewer resources than children inside it.
- Children in the foster care system are eligible for benefits through organizations like the Wonderfund (over $3M for enrichment) and One Can Help, Inc. (over $300K). Children raised by grandparents outside the system receive no such support.
- Many of these children have lost one or both parents to substance use, witnessed family violence, or experienced physical or emotional abuse. Without access to sports, arts, and other structured activities, they miss opportunities for healing, social development, and resilience.
That's where MassGRG comes in. Through our "Bridge the Gap" Fund, we provide support for individual activity requests for children raised by grandparents, bridging the gap in enrichment resources.

Why It Matters
Why Extracurricular Activities Matter
Research consistently demonstrates that participation in quality extracurricular activities promotes:
Improved academic performance and school engagement
Teamwork, leadership, and perseverance
Enhanced social skills and peer relationships
Reduced risk behaviors and improved mental health outcomes
Increased self-esteem and sense of competence
Connection to positive adult mentors and role models
For children who have experienced trauma and disruption in their primary family relationships, structured activities provide stability, routine, and opportunities for positive experiences that support healing and resilience.
What We Stand For
Our Values

Equity
Every child deserves the same enrichment opportunities, regardless of their family structure.

Community
We harness the power of ~60 grandparent support groups across Massachusetts to identify and reach families in need.

Dignity
We meet families where they are, with respect, warmth, and no red tape.

Healing
Structured activities provide stability and joy for children who have experienced trauma.
How We Help
The "Bridge the Gap" Fund
Through our Bridge the Gap Fund, MassGRG provides support for individual activity requests for children ages 2-17 being raised by grandparents or kin outside the Massachusetts foster care system.
From soccer registration to music lessons to summer camp fees, we help give children the same opportunities their peers enjoy, supporting their growth, confidence, and healing.
Every child deserves a chance to discover their passions, build friendships, and experience the joy of simply being a kid.
